injuries that range from minor to fatal.
They are a serious consideration for all ages, and are the most common
single cause of all injuries treated in hospitals. Women are three times more likely than men to
be hospitalized from a fall-related injury.</p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Children have a
risk of falling as they develop. Three
things affect the seriousness of a fall
for a child or baby: height from which the child can fall, what the child falls
onto, and what they may hit as they fall.
Babies should be placed where they cannot fall, as many of them can roll
off a bed before parents know they can roll. Slippery areas should be avoided
by children of all ages.</p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Walking is the
most common fall-related activity for middle-aged people. Falls frequently occur outside where there
are uneven surfaces such as cracks or height changes, and ice on sidewalks or
curbs. Injuries related to these falls can be serious and sometimes fatal.</p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Falls are the top
cause of accidents in people over the age of 65. Normal changes of aging such as poor eyesight
and hearing, illnesses, and physical conditions that affect strength make
people more likely to fall. Poor lighting or throw rugs in the home, and some
medications that upset balance such as medication for depression, sleep problems,
and high blood pressure can make older people more likely to fall. People taking four or more medications or who
have a medicine change in the past two weeks are more likely to fall.</p>Los Alamos Pediatric Clinichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07515633192481078748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6249648096561955115.post-905178144871061162021-02-06T10:06:00.006-07:002021-02-06T10:06:43.340-07:00Is Chocolate Good for Your Health?<p> There is much
controversy regarding the benefits as well as hazards of consuming
chocolate. It is derived from <i>Theobroma cacao</i> seeds, which go through
processing after they are picked.
Theobroma means “food of the Gods,” and many people adore chocolate and
regard it as such. Chocolate contains
dietary flavonoids (also called flavonols) that can have a bitter taste. The milk chocolate process transforms it into
a sweet taste. The added sugar does give
the body additional calories, giving it a bad reputation for causing weight
gain. Possible health benefits of
chocolate come from its antioxidant potential.
The higher the cocoa content and the less sugar content, the more health
benefits there are. </p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Among these
benefits are:</p>

<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Many other
benefits seem to be associated with consumption of chocolate (mainly dark
chocolate), and there are accompanying studies to support the claims. It must be remembered that the high calorie
content of chocolate can affect weight and tooth decay. Some research suggests a relationship to poor
bone structure and osteoporosis. Health
benefits must be weighed against negative aspects to eating chocolate and the
type of chocolate eaten. Moderation may
be the key.</p>Los Alamos Pediatric Clinichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07515633192481078748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6249648096561955115.post-963966276972327822021-01-28T19:40:00.003-07:002021-01-28T19:40:23.073-07:00Sleep Training – A Difficult Task for Parents<p> </p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Sleep training by
allowing babies to cry is growing in use, and it appears that infants can be
trained to sleep through the night at an early age. Allowing a baby to cry for
more than an hour may be necessary for sleep training, but most babies do not
cry that long.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It does not negatively
affect children’s long-term mental and physical health.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">If parents do not
intervene when an infant cries at night, sleep training may be accomplished in
as little as three days. Even though some pediatricians recommend that sleep
training be tried at 4 to 6 months, many of them are finding both with patients
and their own children that 2 months works well. If parents make checks, they
should be quick with no lights or consoling.
Most of the time crying declines within a week, but sleep training may
be harder on parents than the babies.</p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Studies have
shown that parents who are quicker to respond to a crying infant are more
likely to have children who are unable to sleep through the night. Some parents prefer a very gentle approach,
while others wish they had followed the advice regarding sleep training. Both children and parents need to sleep.</p>Los Alamos Pediatric Clinichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07515633192481078748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6249648096561955115.post-31115896219610843992021-01-08T08:30:00.002-07:002021-01-08T08:30:10.131-07:00Eating Spicy Food<p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Many people like
to eat spicy food. Not all chilies are of equal heat, not even the same color
and species of chili raised in a given state.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>The heat is partially determined by the soil in which the chili plant is
grown.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Smaller peppers are generally
hotter than larger varieties. Capsaicin is the molecule responsible for the
heat in chili and foods flavored with them.<span style="color: black;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Other spices, such as mustard and
horseradish, also contain capsaicin.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Capsaicin may have some health benefits, including pain relief to the
skin.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Spicy heat as
well as thermal heat is registered through receptors on the tongue nerve
cells.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The receptor transmits the hot
signal to the brain.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The
gastrointestinal tract may feel the heat of a spicy dish, but while they may
feel like they are burning, your mouth and stomach actually are not.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Water will not quench the heat as milk will,
because pepper oils contain the spicy components and do not dissolve well in
water.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>A regular diet of spicy food
keeps the burn away by inhibiting transmission of pain signals. </span></p><span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Wear gloves when
cutting chilies or wash your hands with warm soap and water to wash the oil off
of your hands.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You may experience
swelling and pain in and around your eyes if you touch your eyes after handling
hot peppers</span>

will be more difficult, particularly for elementary students. They have
difficulty shifting attention, managing focus on less engaging material, and
motor hyperactivity. They also have problems with organization, planning,
working memory, and impulse control.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Teachers provide support, reassurance, and confidence when the child
becomes frustrated.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Even when the child
is properly medicated, it is easier for trained teachers than for parents.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

classically occurs from exposure to extreme cold. </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Hypothermia can occur even at temperatures as
high as 65̊ Fahrenheit, but more often occurs in cold wet weather.</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">It occurs when the body expends more heat
than it creates. </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Hypothermia occurs when
the core temperature of the body drops.</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">
</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">It can be mild (35̊ to 33̊ C or 95̊ to 93.2̊ F), moderate (33̊ to 28̊ C
or 89.6̊ to 80.6̊ F), or severe (below 28̊ C or 80.6̊ F).</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Mild hypothermia is usually accompanied by
shivering, clumsiness, or incoordination. Shivering disappears around 33̊ to 32̊
C.</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">As body temperature continues to
drop, confusion and disorientation occur, followed by coma. A rectal or
esophageal temperature is necessary to accurately determine if hypothermia is
present. A special mercury thermometer or thermistor probes are essential to
obtain an accurate reading.</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Hypothermia
can occur from exposure to cold outdoors or even extreme cold in the home</span></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Even
though hypothermia can happen when children play outdoors in very cold weather,
exposure in a parked car is a possibility. Leaving children in cars is very
dangerous in cold weather and hypothermia can happen in minutes. Their small
body mass makes young children more prone to heat loss and hypothermia than
adults.</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Children also have less fat,
which helps to serve as protective insulation.</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">
</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Sitting in a small confined space leads to hypothermia faster.</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">The interior of a car becomes cold quickly
and it should be a rule never to leave any living creature alone in a car,

is seriously ill and that a high fever will cause brain damage in
children. Fever is actually the immune
system fighting a virus or bacteria.
Fever may not feel friendly, but it is not necessarily a foe. It helps the body fight the infection.
Temperatures vary throughout the day and differ by age, activity level, and
other factors. Most doctors consider 100.4 F to 100.9 F as the beginning of a
fever, but parents will give Tylenol for elevated temperatures (below 100 F).</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p></o:p></p>

parasitic nematodes (round worms) that live in your ear. They are sometimes known as a brain worm,
sticky music, or stuck song syndrome.
Earworms are a catchy piece of music that repeats through a person’s
mind when it is no longer playing. Songs
with lyrics may account for a little over 73% of earworms. While about 90
percent of people experience earworms at least once a week, music lovers have
more frequent and longer earworm episodes.
Men and women experience earworms equally, but they tend to last longer
and irritate women more. </p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Although there
are many postulations regarding the cause of earworms, why we get them remains
a scientific mystery. We do know that
short catchy tunes are most likely to get stuck rather than a symphony. Some things exacerbate earworms, such as
frequency and duration of exposure to music, worry, stress, fatigue, and
idleness. </p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Some people can
get rid of earworms, but others are unable to.
One technique, called exposure, involves listening to the entire song
instead of the snippet that is repeating.
It is like a completion task.
Knowing the whole thing
eliminates need for it to be stuck in your head. Another form of distraction is to sing the
song out loud, but change some of the words or slightly throw off the
melody. This may cause the song to
fade. Another method is to come up with
a competing melody to think about.</p>Los Alamos Pediatric Clinichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07515633192481078748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6249648096561955115.post-87557846044799699952020-09-20T15:39:00.002-06:002020-09-20T15:39:16.309-06:00Vision and Herbs<p>There are eye
diseases that can lead to blindness, and very little is considered in
preventing these problems. Stresses of
environmental chemicals, cigarette smoke and radiation, hormonal levels, and
even emotional stress can affect eye inflammation and cell death, These stressors cause the production of a
reactive oxygen species that can not only damage the retina, cornea, and other
structures of the eye, but can also damage kidneys, peripheral nerves, joints,
heart, and other organs.</p>

able to regulate their body temperature, and extremes will adversely affect
them, whether they result from natural
or manmade causes. According to national data, heatstroke deaths are the
leading cause of noncrash related auto fatalities for children ages 14 and
younger, more than half under 2 years old.
The body of a child heats up faster than that of an adult and most of
these deaths occur in the summer. Even
if the outside temperature is 72 degrees, in less than 30 minutes the interior
of a car will have reached a deadly temperature. It does not matter whether the windows are
open or closed. Symptoms of heatstroke
require immediate attention and include shock, collapse, a temperature of over
104 degrees, fainting, seizures and inability to walk. </p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span>Children and pets
left in cars can die of heatstroke in minutes.
However, in this country, hundreds of pets also die after being left in
hot cars. The American Veterinary Medicine
Association reminds us that before a pet is put in a vehicle, ask if you really
need to take the pet with you. If the
answer is no, leave the pet safely at home.</p>Los Alamos Pediatric Clinichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07515633192481078748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6249648096561955115.post-80061186386395382232020-07-17T14:33:00.001-06:002020-07-17T14:33:00.984-06:00Insect Repellents<br />

<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Vitamin D is very
important to human health.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It plays a
crucial role in disease prevention and maintaining optimal health. It also has
a role in calcium homeostasis and metabolism.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Vitamin D first became famous when it was realized that it would prevent
rickets in children and since 1933 has been added to milk in this country.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Rickets is still a problem in many countries
because breast milk is low in vitamin D, and exposure to the sun may be limited
by social customs and climatic conditions.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Low vitamin D levels are a worldwide problem in the elderly and common
in children and some adults.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Supplementation
of vitamin D is controversial, and some estimates place levels of insufficient
vitamin D in up to 85 percent of people.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>In a study of Hawaiian surfers, 60 percent were deficient in vitamin D.
Most people are unware they have a deficiency.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Supplemental vitamin D comes in two forms, ergocalciferol (vitamin D2)
and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The
body must convert either form into a more active form.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Magnesium is required for the activation of
vitamin D.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In people who are magnesium
deficient, vitamin D is stored in its inactive form.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Some in the
medical world feel that D3 is converted 500 percent faster than D2.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>D2 is prescribed by most physicians and must
be obtained by prescription.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It will be
converted into D3 and then the more active form in the body.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>D3 is available without a prescription and as
a nutritional supplement.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Some people do
not absorb the tablet form of vitamin D, but will absorb the liquid form.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There are physicians who believe by taking
vitamin D the demand for vitamin K2 is increased, and that for every 1,000 IUs
of Vitamin D you will benefit from about 100 to 200 micrograms of vitamin K2.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Laundry is the
eternal chore that must always be done.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Many of us make mistakes regarding how we handle our laundry, and it can
affect our health.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>For example, TV has
lead us to believe that unless our clothes smell “spring fresh,” they are not
clean.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This affects those of us who are
adversely sensitive to fragrances.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Even
“masking fragrances,” designed to cover unpleasant chemical smells of a product
will negatively affect the sensitive person and cause them to have
symptoms.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Fabric softeners are scented
and contain over five chemicals that are neurotoxic and carcinogenic.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Reading labels is of extreme importance to
avoid harmful exposures.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Watch for the
words “scent, fragrance, or masking fragrance” anywhere in the label.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

visible stains, hanging it up and airing it out is all that is necessary before
wearing it again.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Clothing worn when
exercising is a different situation as our bodies sweat and detoxify while we

worn numerous times as rewearing it can cause these toxins to be absorbed.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
Sleep hygiene deals with all factors that may interfere
with sleep.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It is a series of habits and
activities that will improve ability to fall asleep and stay asleep.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It will increase the chances of getting
better sleep, and can be of some help for virtually every type of sleep
problem.<o:p></o:p></div>

The bedroom is very important in sleep hygiene and
combating sleep problems.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It should be
clean, quiet, and at times an air cleaner may be helpful.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The bed should have a comfortable mattress
and pillows, and both should be replaced whenever they are no longer
comfortable.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Bedding should all be
washable.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Clock watching, reading, and
television in bed can occupy attention and prohibit sleep.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The only two activities for which the bed
should be used are sleeping and sex.<o:p></o:p></div>

for sleeping.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Allow enough time for
sleep and keep a regular sleeping schedule, even on weekends.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Diet, exercise too close to bedtime,
caffeine, and alcohol can all adversely affect sleep, as can smoking.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>If you practice good sleep hygiene and still

<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
Foods inevitably mold and the question arises, “Is it
safe to eat moldy food?”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Tossing large
amounts of food can seem to be uneconomical and people hesitate to do it.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>However in some cases eating moldy food can
cause serious consequences.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There are
certain rules that never change regarding the safety of eating moldy food.<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If the food is hard, such as a brick of cheese or a carrot,
the moldy section can be cut off (plus about one inch around it) and the food
safely eaten.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Small mold spots can be
trimmed off of firm vegetables.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>To avoid
spreading the mold, care must be exercised to keep the knife out of the moldy
areas. Soft foods should be thrown away when mold is spotted.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The “roots” of mold can permeate soft foods,
contaminating areas that appear to be mold free.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Molds also release toxins (mycotoxins) that
can be present in the food.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Foods with
high moisture content, left-over meats and casseroles, yogurt, jams and
jellies, soft fruits and vegetables, bread and baked goods, peanut butter,
legumes, and nuts must all be discarded if moldy.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Soft cheeses must be discarded, but cheeses
such as Brie and Camembert should be discarded only if they contain mold that
is not a part of the manufacturing process. If you have fruit that is about to
mold or spoil, toss it in the freezer and blend it later to make
smoothies.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Moldy food should be placed in a paper or plastic bag before
it is discarded.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Do not attempt to smell
moldy food to see if it has spoiled.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>This can introduce mold spores into your respiratory tract.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You may also have to discard food that
possibly touched the moldy area as molds can spread quickly, particularly in
produce.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Proper food storage will help
prevent food spoilage.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Many people believe that drinking diet soda will allow them
to “have their cake and eat it too” and control their weight.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Research has repeatedly shown that
artificially sweetened no- or low- calorie drinks and other diet foods actually
stimulate appetite, increase cravings for carbohydrates, and stimulate fat
storage and weight gain. In fact diet soda drinkers suffer from the same health
problems as those who drink regular soda.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>These health problems include excessive weight gain, type 2 diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, and stroke.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Artificial sweeteners trigger enhanced activity in the
pleasure centers of the brain, yet provide less satisfaction.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The brain craves more of it because there is
no satisfaction on a cellular level by the sugar imposter.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This can contribute to overeating and weight
gain as well as an addiction to artificial sweeteners.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Recent studies show that older women who
drink at least two diet drinks a day are more likely to have a heart attack,
stroke, or other cardiovascular issue. The reason for this is unclear, but it
is possible that there are feedback mechanisms that are disrupted.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
Terpenes and terpenoids are a large class of organic
compounds found mainly in plants. The
only difference between them is that terpenes contain only carbon and hydrogen,
while terpenoids also contain oxygen.
They are in all parts of a plant, including the leaves, stems, flowers,
and pollen. They occur in the essential
oils of plants obtained by steam distilling plants. They are responsible for odors (fragrances)
and colors of many plants. Turpentine is
a terpene, and the distinctive odor of juniper and piñon trees is caused by
terpenes. Terpenes also occur in animals
and are building blocks within nearly every living creature. Steroids are produced from terpenoid
precursors. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
People who are chemically sensitive are often sensitive to
terpenes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They may develop symptoms and
problems from fragrances associated with many different products, including
essential oils. Terpenes are encountered in many places and are natural flavor
additives for food; fragrance elements in perfumes; and have traditional and
alternative medicinal uses.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They are
additives in many commercial products and may play a large role in pollen
allergy.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>All plants contain terpenes and
their levels go up about a month before the plant pollinates.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>People frequently have symptoms to both the
terpenes and the pollen.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Foods, particularly foods to which there is a sensitivity or
allergy, can cause joints to ache and deteriorate.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Although any joint can be affected, hip,
knee, and ankle joints may become excruciatingly painful if these foods are
eaten.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The thumb joint can also be
painful.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Some people choose to eat the
foods occasionally with full knowledge that their painful joints will adversely
affect their sleep and ability to move for several days.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Sometimes the ankles become so painful the
person has difficulty walking or may even become unable to walk for a
time.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>

Sugar, wheat, pork, and foods in the Nightshade Family (a
botanical family) tend to exacerbate arthritic pain.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The Nightshade Family includes tomatoes,
potatoes, all peppers, eggplant, and pimentos.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>(Tobacco is also in the Nightshade family.)<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Even potato chips can trigger pain in some
people.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Peppers of all kinds (especially
bell peppers and chili peppers) are problematic for many people with
arthritis.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It may take 6 to 9 months of <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">total</b> avoidance to determine if members
of the Nightshade Family are affecting arthritis. <span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in our
bodies.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It is important in a wide
variety of biochemical processes in the body and is required for the production
of more than 300 different enzymes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>If
the body does not have enough magnesium, it cannot function optimally.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Insufficient cellular magnesium levels can
affect metabolic function that leads to serious health problems.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Magnesium works in tandem with calcium, vitamins
D and K2.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Eating processed food is a
primary risk factor for magnesium deficiency.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Stress, lack of sleep, alcohol consumption, and use of some prescription
drugs (diuretics, statins, fluoride and fluoride-containing drugs) can also
cause the loss of magnesium.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
Among the most common symptoms that magnesium is lacking
are “Charlie horses” (muscle spasms that occur when you stretch your legs),
fatigue or weakness, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, and headaches or
migraines.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>More serious symptoms include
abnormal heart rhythms and coronary spasms, muscle cramps and contractions,
seizures, numbness and tingling, and personality changes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>All of these are warning signs that you may
need to correct a magnesium deficiency. Deficiencies can be improved/corrected
by eating a varied diet, being careful to include plenty of dark-green leafy
vegetables. It is important to remember that magnesium content of foods depends
on the amount of magnesium in the soil in which a plant was grown.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Some people must add a magnesium supplement
if sufficient magnesium is not present in their diet.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Children are more
severely affected by temperature extremes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Adults can actively seek help, but children depend on the adults to get
them assistance. Even newborn infants are prone to hypothermia because of their
large body surface area, small amount of subcutaneous fat, and decreased
ability to shiver. Never leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle, whether
it is hot or cold, even for a minute.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Using the
following safety procedures will help prevent tragedies.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>If you see a child unattended in a hot or
cold vehicle, call 911.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Be sure that all
occupants leave a vehicle, and do not forget a sleeping baby.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Teach children that vehicles are not a play
area, and be certain that children do not have access to keys or remote entry
devices.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>If a child is missing, check
the pool first, and then the car, including the trunk.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Always have some kind of reminder that there
is a child in the car.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Make “look before
you lock the car and leave” a routine when getting out of the car.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Have a plan that childcare providers call you
if a child does not arrive at the prescribed place on time.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Some parents have
been suspected of murdering their children by leaving them unattended in a car
during temperature extremes. Different states have varying laws for
consequences to parents who leave children unattended in a vehicle.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The consequences can vary from arrests to
court appearances, fines, jail time, or all of these.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Several states have Good Samaritan laws that
allow private citizens to break into motor vehicles if they notice a child or
animal in extreme jeopardy. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Food allergies can cause many different symptoms, affecting
any body system.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They are an immune
mediated reaction (antigen-antibody interaction to a food or a food
additive).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Traditional allergists
recognize only IgE mediated (immunoglobulin E-a type of antibody traditionally
associated with allergy) reactions as an allergic reaction.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>These are immediate reactions that occur very
rapidly after eating the food.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Reactions
may include hives, asthma, rhinitis, eczema, swelling of the lips and face, or
anaphylactic shock (serious rapid onset allergic reaction affecting multiple
body systems).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Foods causing these
symptoms need to be avoided.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Should this
type of reaction occur, treatment is with epinephrine.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Many other reactions to foods may be cell mediated or IgG
mediated (immunoglobulin G - a special type of antibody) and largely outnumber
IgE reactions.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They are not considered
an allergy by traditional medicine because they are not IgE mediated.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They are spoken of as a food sensitivity or
intolerance.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They may include less
dramatic symptoms and symptoms may delayed by hours or even days.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>However, symptoms may be serious and
uncomfortable.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Foods to which there is a
sensitivity/intolerance can sometimes be eaten without causing symptoms as long
as exposures are minimal, and the foods are not eaten too often.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
The technical term for pinkeye and itchy, swollen, runny
eyes is conjunctivitis.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>white of the eye is red and is a symptom
common to all forms of conjunctivitis.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>The three most common forms of conjunctivitis are viral, bacterial, and
allergic.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Allergic conjunctivitis is not
contagious and is usually related to exposure to flowers and pollen.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The eye will be watery, itchy, red, and
swollen, and both eyes can be affected.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>There is usually very little discharge.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
While both are contagious, bacterial conjunctivitis does not
spread as easily as viral conjunctivitis.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>In viral conjunctivitis there is usually a watery discharge, swelling,
and possible light sensitivity. A recent cold or contact with an infected
person are common precursors.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The virus
can live for several weeks on surfaces touched by an infected person (even
computer keyboards).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The discharge of
bacterial conjunctivitis is thicker with more mucus.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Often an affected eye is stuck closed with
mucous on awakening in the morning. Only bacterial conjunctivitis may require
antibiotic eye drops.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The American
Academy of Pediatrics suggests that children do not need to stay home for 24
hours after starting antibiotic eye drops, but can return to school.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For any type of conjunctivitis, <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">immediately discard used tissues</b>.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Do not share towels, pillows. or anything coming in contact with the
eyes or hands.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Wet washcloth compresses
applied to the eyelids every hour can be soothing.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Cold compresses may be used, but for
bacterial conjunctivitis, warm compresses may be better.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>A heated rice bag can be placed on top of a
wet wash cloth.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>USE A FRESH WASHCLOTH
EACH TIME.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Nonpreserved artificial tears
may also be helpful.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Once opened, they
should be kept in the refrigerator.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The
vial must be discarded after the pinkeye resolves.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Do not use antihistamine eye drops, such as
Visine.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Ear infections can be a cause of ear pain.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Otitis media is the term used for middle ear
infection.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Common in childhood, otitis
media occurs infrequently in adults.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Many children have recurrent ear infections that often occur after a
cold or upper respiratory infection. Inflammation of the Eustachian tube
prevents normal fluid drainage from the middle ear, which serves as a growth
media for bacteria.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Secondhand tobacco
smoke may predispose a child to middle ear infections.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Frequently eaten foods or allergies can alter
the tissue resistance of the ear, setting up conditions for an infection.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Milk is a prime suspect.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Wheat, egg, peanut, soy, and corn can cause
fluid behind the eardrum, which predisposes the child to ear infections. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Eustachian tube dysfunction plays a role in ear
infections.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The Eustachian tube drains
both fluid and mucus from the middle ear into the nose.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The Eustachian tube in children is short,
straight, and may not drain well, resulting in mucus accumulation in the middle
ear.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>If the mucus becomes thick and
glue-like, the condition is known as glue ear. Fluid behind the eardrum without
infection can be very painful, but the pain may come and go.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Hearing loss, delayed development of speech
and language skills, and problems with gross motor skills and balance may
result.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
Because typical symptoms overlap other conditions, a
physician should be consulted, particularly in the case of recurrent ear
infections.<o:p></o:p></div>
